Lime Mortar

MA Specific

Definition

Soft, flexible, and permeable mortar used in historic masonry construction (pre-1930s). Unlike modern Portland cement, lime mortar allows moisture to evaporate through mortar joints, preventing brick damage. Essential for proper maintenance of historic brick homes.

Example

A Beacon Hill rowhouse requires lime mortar repointing ($15,000-$40,000) instead of modern cement. Using Portland cement would trap moisture, causing spalling and structural damage within 5 years.
