Lintel

Definition

A horizontal beam (typically steel in 1860-1940 construction) that spans the opening above windows and doors to support the masonry above. When steel lintels rust, they expand up to 10x their original size, causing "jacking" that cracks brick above windows.

Example

A Cambridge rowhouse shows horizontal cracks above three windows—sign of rusted lintels expanding and pushing bricks upward. Replacement costs $8,000-$20,000 per window opening.
