Knob and Tube Wiring

MA Specific

Definition

Historic electrical wiring system common in homes built before 1940. Features separate hot and neutral wires running through ceramic knobs and tubes. Many insurance companies refuse coverage or charge higher premiums due to fire risk, and it often fails home inspections.

Example

A 1920s Winchester colonial with knob and tube wiring may face insurance non-renewal or require a $15,000-$25,000 rewiring before closing. Many buyers request seller credits or rewiring as a contingency.
