Wind Deductible

MA Specific

Definition

A separate, often percentage-based deductible for wind and hurricane damage, in addition to your standard deductible. Common in coastal areas. In Massachusetts coastal counties, 60% of policyholders have mandatory wind deductibles (typically 1-5% of dwelling limit).

Example

A $1.4M Cape Cod home with a 5% wind deductible means you pay the first $70,000 out-of-pocket on any hurricane claim before insurance kicks in—on top of higher premiums. This "hidden" self-insurance risk can surprise buyers.
