VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds)

Definition

Harmful chemicals that evaporate from paints, adhesives, and building materials. Modern low-VOC or zero-VOC products reduce indoor air pollution. Historic homes often have high VOC levels from old materials and lead-based paints.

Example

When renovating a South End brownstone, using zero-VOC paints and adhesives creates healthier indoor air quality compared to historic materials containing lead and other toxins.
