Definition

A voter-approved exception to Massachusetts Proposition 2½ that allows municipalities to exceed the 2.5% annual tax levy increase limit for specific projects or operating expenses. Requires majority vote in a local election.

Example

Your town proposes a $5 million override to fund a new school building. Voters approve it, allowing the town to increase property taxes beyond the 2.5% limit to pay for the project over 20 years.
