Fiber Cement

Definition

Durable exterior building material made from cement, sand, and cellulose fibers. Mimics painted wood trim/siding but never rots, resists fire/insects, and lasts 50+ years with minimal maintenance. Used in neo-historic construction to replicate traditional aesthetics.

Example

A new Somerville rowhouse uses fiber cement for trim and cornices. Looks identical to historic painted wood from the street but requires painting only once per decade vs. every 3-5 years.
