ERV (Energy Recovery Ventilator)

Definition

Mechanical ventilation system that continuously exchanges stale indoor air with filtered outdoor air while recovering heat/cooling energy. Required in modern airtight construction to prevent indoor air quality problems.

Example

A new neo-historic rowhouse in Cambridge uses an ERV system to maintain fresh air without the drafts of historic homes, recovering 70-80% of heating/cooling energy during air exchange.
