Assignment of Benefits (AOB)

MA Specific

Definition

A process where you assign your insurance claim benefits to a third party (contractor, public adjuster). As of June 2025, the Massachusetts FAIR Plan (MPIUA) requires validation of any third party before assignment to protect against questionable contractors after catastrophes.

Example

After a storm, a contractor offers to handle your claim if you sign an AOB form. The FAIR Plan now requires they validate the contractor before accepting the assignment, protecting you from scams seen in other states.
