Equity

Calculation

Definition

The difference between what your home is worth and what you owe on your mortgage. Equity increases as you pay down your loan and/or as your property value appreciates.

Formula

Equity = Current Market Value - Outstanding Mortgage Balance

Example

If your home is worth $600,000 and you owe $450,000, you have $150,000 in equity (25%).
